       Мелкая ссора из-за сигарет в общей палате перерастает в масштабную потасовку. Макмёрфи вместе с другим пациентом, глухонемым индейцем, переводят в отделение для буйных. Там Макмёрфи случайно узнает, что индеец, могучий, как богатырь, и огромный, как скала, прекрасно слышит и может говорить. Тот факт, что этому человеку удается так долго дурачить окружающих, приводит Макмёрфи в безудержную радость. Он безропотно сносит несколько сеансов электрошока.
       Однажды ночью при соучастии чернокожего охранника Макмёрфи проводит в общую палату 2 девиц с большим запасом выпивки. На всеобщей попойке, которой Макмёрфи хочет отметить свой побег, закомплексованный заика Билли Биббит впервые в жизни занимается любовью с девушкой. Макмёрфи напивается и забывает уйти; наутро его находят на полу вместе с другими пациентами. Сестра Гнусен выговаривает Билли за его поведение и угрожает рассказать обо всем его матери, тем самым толкая молодого человека на самоубийство: он вскрывает себе вены. В ярости Макмёрфи пытается задушить медсестpy. Его отправляют на жесткий курс лечения, после которого он превращается в «овощ». Индеец, которого Макмёрфи своим примером вдохновил на побег, хочет забрать его с собой. Но, видя его состояние, он предпочитает задушить его подушкой, а затем прыгает в окно и идет в Канаду, навстречу свободе.
       ►  С 1963 по 1967 г. Милош Форман снял в родной стране несколько фильмов – среднеметражку Конкурс, Konkurs, 1963; Черный Петр, Cerný Petr, 1964; Любовные похождения блондинки, Lásky jedné plavovlásky, 1965, – отличающиеся шутливой, по-молодому бодрой и по-новому свободной тональностью, тесно связанной с т. н. Пражской весной. Эта серия фильмов весьма показательно завершается едкой и мрачной, лишь обманчиво комедийной картиной Гори, моя барышня, Horí, má panenko, 1967. Американский период Формана открывается изобретательным и блестящим фильмом, с большой социальной остротой описывающим американскую буржуазию (Отрыв, Taking Off, 1971). В основу фильма было положено существование выдуманной, но очень правдоподобной «Ассоциации родителей, разыскивающих собственных детей». Эта картина обозначила переход Формана к новому стилю, с которым он снискал огромный успех во всем мире (Над кукушкиным гнездом; Волосы, Hair, 1979; Амадей, Amadeus, 1984).
       Каждый раз Форман берет за основу богатый материал, зарекомендовавший себя на театральной сцене или в литературе, и ловко адаптирует его для кино, делая его еще ярче и популярнее. Достоинства Формана-экранизатора позволяют говорить о том, что его режиссура вдыхает новую жизнь в обрабатываемый материал. (В случае с Волосами – мюзиклом, ставшим символом для целого поколения, – материал первоисточника рассматривается под новым углом, подвергается широкому и глубокому переосмыслению.) Основные качества Формана: невероятная энергия, с которой он задает новый ритм экранизируемому произведению, стремление перенести действие в реальное географическое пространство первоисточника (театры Австрии и Центральной Европы в Амадее, больница г. Салем, штат Орегон, в Над кукушкиным гнездом) и особенный дар в подборе актеров и работе с ними. Джек Николсон играет в этом фильме свою лучшую роль. Все окружающие его персонажи ярки и выразительны: в особенности те, роли которых исполняют Дэнни Де Вито, ставший знаменитым лишь 10 лет спустя, и Брэд Дуриф, снявшийся позднее в главной роли в фильме Хьюстона Мудрая кровь, Wise Blood, 1979.
       Стоит упомянуть, что в бестселлере Кена Кизи сюжет изложен, словно в галлюцинаторном бреду: от 1-го лица, с точки зрения индейца, прошедшего через 200 сеансов электрошоковой терапии. В сценической переработке Дэйла Вассермена, на которую опирается фильм (хотя это не указано в титрах), содержание романа приобрело большую ясность и форму универсальной аллегории. Формана в фильме интересует прежде всего титаническая, грандиозная, но при этом комичная борьба между человеком, в разумной степени здоровым и в разумной степени безумным, и чудовищной системой в лице холодной и ужасающей сестры Гнусен, всегда уверенной в своей абсолютной правоте. Она – сторонник всеобщей уравниловки, репрессий, злобного и беспощадного порядка, порождающего рабов и диктаторов. Для человека эта борьба изначально обречена на поражение – если он действует в одиночку; но, распространяясь, подобно заразе, она приносит плоды. Дружба с Макмёрфи могла бы стать лучшим лекарством для пациентов больницы, пускай она бессильна их изменить.
       Картина замечательна тем, что в ней нет назидательности, наставлений и пафоса: ее сила исходит от самой атмосферы мест, поворотов сюжета, интонационных перепадов и драгоценной яркости характеров. Хотя Над кукушкиным гнездом нельзя назвать ни совершенно оригинальной, ни очень личной для автора картиной (впрочем, как и Волосы, и Амадея), это не умаляет ее значения как абсолютного шедевра американского кинематографа 70-х гг. (каковых в этот период насчитывается довольно мало).
       N.B. Фильм получил 5 основных «Оскаров» (за лучшие фильм, режиссуру, сценарий, главные мужскую и женскую роли) – впервые со времен Это случилось однажды ночью, It Happened One Night. Пьеса, поставленная на Бродвее в 1963 г. с Кёрком Дагласом в главной роли, имела лишь относительный успех. Слава пришла к ней за пределами Бродвея, в 1973 г. (главную роль исполнял уже Уильям Девэйн). Кёрк Даглас давно хотел перенести пьесу на экран и подтолкнул своего сына Майкла продюсировать фильм.
